Lymphatic Drainage After Lipo or a BBL: When to Start and What to Expect
Your surgeon recommended lymphatic massage, and now you have questions. Here's a clear guide to post-surgical lymphatic drainage and how it supports your recovery.
If you've just had liposuction, a BBL or another body contouring procedure, your surgeon has probably mentioned lymphatic drainage massage. It's one of the most common recommendations after cosmetic surgery, and for good reason.
Here's what it does, when to start, and what your sessions will look like.
Why swelling happens after surgery
After liposuction and similar procedures, your body sends fluid to the treated areas as part of healing. The lymphatic system is responsible for clearing that fluid, but surgery temporarily disrupts it, so swelling builds up.
Some swelling is completely normal. But when fluid lingers, it can lead to:
Ongoing puffiness and discomfort
Firmness or tightness in the treated areas
A higher chance of developing fibrosis (hardened, lumpy tissue)
Results that take longer to settle
How lymphatic drainage helps
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized technique that supports your lymphatic system in moving excess fluid away from the treated areas. It's very different from a deep tissue massage. The pressure is light and rhythmic, and it should feel comfortable.
Our therapists are trained in the Vodder method, and they have extensive experience working with post-surgical clients.
When should you start?
The right time depends on your procedure and your surgeon's instructions. Many surgeons want their patients to begin lymphatic drainage soon after surgery, but always follow your own surgeon's guidance on timing.
If you're planning surgery, it helps to book your first few sessions in advance so you aren't trying to find appointments while you're sore and recovering.
How many sessions will you need?
This varies from person to person, but most clients benefit from:
Early recovery: more frequent sessions, often a few times a week, while swelling is at its peak
As you improve: sessions spaced further apart as swelling reduces
Later recovery: occasional sessions, plus Endermologie if any firm or fibrotic areas develop
We'll adjust your plan at each visit based on how you're healing.
What to expect at your appointments
Wear or bring your compression garment, since you'll put it back on after your session. We'll ask about your procedure, your surgeon's instructions and how you're feeling, then work gently around the treated areas.
If we notice anything that needs medical attention, such as signs of infection or a fluid collection, we'll refer you straight back to your surgeon.
