Heavy, Painful Legs That Won’t Change? Understanding Lipedema and How We Can Help

If diet and exercise haven't changed the shape or discomfort of your legs, you're not alone, and it's not your fault. Here's what you should know about lipedema.

Many women spend years being told to eat less and exercise more, while their legs or arms stay the same. Often they also feel heavy, tender or bruise easily. For many of them, the real answer is lipedema.

Lipedema is a chronic condition that's often misunderstood or missed. Understanding it is the first step toward managing it well.

What is lipedema?

Lipedema is a disorder of fat tissue that almost always affects women. It usually causes a symmetrical build-up of fat in the legs, hips and sometimes the arms, while the hands and feet are typically spared. It often begins or progresses at times of hormonal change, such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause.

Common signs include:

  • Disproportionately larger legs, hips or arms compared to the upper body

  • Tenderness or pain when the area is touched or pressed

  • Easy bruising

  • A feeling of heaviness or fullness, especially by the end of the day

  • Fat tissue that doesn't respond to diet or exercise the way other areas do

  • A "cuff" at the ankles or wrists

Lipedema is different from lymphedema, though the two can occur together, especially in later stages.

Getting the right diagnosis

If these signs sound familiar, start by talking to a physician who is familiar with lipedema. A proper diagnosis rules out other causes and helps you build the right care team.

We work alongside your medical providers. Our role is to support you with hands-on care that helps manage symptoms day to day.

How manual therapy can help

There's no cure for lipedema, but there's a lot that can help you feel better. At Dynamic Rebalance, we focus on two complementary treatments.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). Our therapists are trained in the Vodder method. MLD is a gentle, rhythmic technique that supports lymphatic flow, which many clients find helps with heaviness, swelling and tenderness.

Endermologie. Our LPG Alliance device provides controlled mechanical stimulation of the skin and underlying tissue. For lipedema clients, it's used to help improve tissue texture, support circulation and lymphatic flow, and ease that tight, heavy feeling.

Treatment pressure is always adjusted to your comfort, which matters because lipedema tissue is often tender.

Building a long-term plan

Lipedema is a long-term condition, so consistency matters more than any single session. Most clients do best with a regular treatment schedule alongside the other parts of their care, such as compression garments, movement they enjoy, and guidance from their physician.

We offer treatment packages to make ongoing care easier to keep up with, and many of our treatments are HSA/FSA eligible.

You don't have to figure this out alone

If you're living with lipedema, or think you might be, we'd be glad to talk through your options. Our downtown Chicago clinic specializes in lymphatic care, and we take the time to understand your history and goals before we start.
